September 16, 2004--Community Mediation Services (“CMS”), a private non-profit corporation in Hallowell, has been certified to provide services under the Maine State Agricultural Mediation Program. This certification covers disputes relating to agricultural loans, wetlands determination, compliance with farm programs, including conservation programs, agricultural credit, rural water loans, grazing on National Forest System lands, pesticides, rural housing loans, rural business loans, crop insurance and other issues the United States Secretary of Agriculture may subsequently consider appropriate. CMS will also mediate disputes between farmers and their neighbors and any other disputes involving farmers under this program. CMS, celebrating its tenth anniversary, offers free mediation services to any community member in dispute. The subjects they mediate include family disputes, neighborhood quarrels, workplace and school disputes, landlord/tenant issues and many others. Trained volunteer mediators guide the parties to come to their own solutions to the disagreements, rather than imposing an opinion. The desired outcome to the mediation is a “win-win” resolution that each party can live with. Farmers facing adverse decisions regarding USDA agriculture credit, compliance, or wetlands determinations; or having disputes with neighbors or others regarding farm issues are encouraged to contact Community Mediation Services at (207) 621-6848. November 19, 2002---Community Mediation Services, a private non-profit located on Arsenal Street in Augusta, has received a grant in the amount of nearly $5000 from the National Association for Community Mediation, to help resolve conflicts in culturally diverse areas of Androscoggin County.

Community Mediation Services provides mediation free of charge to people in Kennebec, Somerset, Androscoggin, Oxford, Franklin, Knox, Waldo, Sagadahoc and Lincoln counties. The trained mediators on their roster help to resolve conflicts in homes, neighborhoods, workplaces and schools.

The grant funds will be used to provide Somali- and French-speaking individuals with a 40-hour basic mediation training course at a much reduced cost. These newly trained mediators will then be available to resolve disputes, bringing their cultural expertise and awareness to the table along with their conflict resolution skills. The grant will also make multi-lingual brochures, posters and other outreach materials available to culturally diverse areas.

Interested persons who are fluent in Somali and/or French as well as English are encouraged to contact Community Mediation Services at 621-6848 for more information. Those experiencing conflicts within their homes and communities are also encouraged to call to see whether mediation may be their solution.

Community Mediation Services Receives $2,000 Grant

Augusta--Community Mediation Services (CMS) recently received a $2,000.00 grant from the Maine Community Foundation (MCF) to help it form a coalition with two other mediation centers in Maine, Penquis Dispute Resolution Center in Bangor and Community Mediation Center in Portland. CMS hopes to build on the centers' shared vision to offer alternative dispute resolution services throughout the state of Maine.

"We hope that pooling our assets and sharing the knowledge that each center has gained as a separate entity will build a Coalition that will have the strength of three," said Tracy Walk, Executive Director of CMS. "We are confident that our combined efforts will produce increased awareness of community mediation and advance the cause of alternative dispute resolution in the state of Maine."

Community Mediation Services, a non-profit organization incorporated in February of 1994, promotes peacemaking. Its mission is to help people resolve everyday disagreements in our schools, homes, communities and workplaces using trained mediators.
